6,000-7,000 Fukushima dogs and cats died from the tsunami or from being Left Behind when their owners were evacuated and not allowed to take their pets.  The report was from the Fukushima Prefecture and revealed by a Japanese Veterinarian for a “seminar”.   Interesting how the information never made it to the news agencies.  The Japanese Veterinarian was part of “animal rescue operations for small animals” for the Fukushima Left Behind pets.

“According to a report from Fukushima Prefecture, prior to the disaster, approximately 10,000 dogs and cats were living within the so-called “caution zone”. It is estimated that approximately 60 to 70% of these animals died either in the tsunami or else from subsequent starvation, weakness, etc.”

Fukushima Medical University launches 30 year study :focus Fukushima children and pregnant mothers and the Government of Japan says that living around a highly contaminated area is safe. ????

“In July the Fukushima Medical University launched an ambitious survey intended to establish individual radiation exposures by pinpointing people’s exact whereabouts during the crisis, the amount of time they spent outdoors, and everything they ate and drank. The study will provide ongoing thyroid exams for all of Fukushima prefecture’s children, and checkups for pregnant women and evacuees. It is expected to continue for at least 30 years.”

This is really a statement of just how scientists/researchers view LIFE, any kind of life, human or animal. They are all “potential” study subjects. And, again, if areas of Fukushima are ready to have people come back to live; why the study? Especially one that might last 30 years? Let’s just hope that they inform the people that they are “test” subjects for this study because the Government of Japan wants everyone to move back so that they can live next to a highly contaminated radioactive zone.  (areas that are red and pink on the map)

Question for the Ministry of Environment: How many pet dogs were captured, labeled feral, and murdered?

On review of the 被災ペット対策の状況 site, it is curious that the number of dogs that have been rescued would be so low.  It is our understanding that when dogs were captured for protection, to make the distinction that they were NOT FERAL, the dogs were given commands that they had to obey.
The commands that were given to these dogs that were hungry, thirsty, confused, scared, and/or hurt were : sit; lie down; and then gently take the food from the hand that was holding it out for them to see.
If the dog failed any part of this test, they were deemed feral.  There is no information that you have provided on your website as to how many dogs that were captured and were labeled feral and thus NOT PROTECTED. Please provide the number of feral dogs captured and where or what happened to them by the “veterinarians” that captured them.
Our Coalition is most interested to know how many dogs were murdered by this test because they failed a part of this most unreasonable test. We say murder because if the animal was subject to such an unreasonable test after being separated from its owner, left to find food and water in an area that was devoid of people after being accustomed to being cared for, having to struggle to survive against other animals that may attack it, possibly sick or hurt; this test that was administered to label it a domestic pet was ridiculous, especially when it was administered by veterinarians that should have known that most of the dogs tested would FAIL under those circumstances.
Did the Japanese research veterinarians need dogs for radiation research testing and that is why this test was administered? Feral dogs are not protected and the bonus would be that it can then be assumed that the feral dog had NO OWNER.  Did the Japan Veterinary Medical Association hope that everyone would forget about the remaining Fukushima dogs?
We await your response.
