The thread about who had the idea to study the baby animals and the pregnant ones.

April 5, 2012

I
So, “R” proposed studying the effects on baby animals and pregnant ones.
yes, that’s right. Then the meat is rendered useless
and they have to resort to euthanasia
correct me if I am wrong, R.December 2

R
For already contaminated livestock reached to steady states it is very hard to clean thesre radiation out.December 2

I
However, if these animals would have been removed earlier, it would have been easier to decontaminate them. December 2

R
Yes pretty much since it is very hard to remove contamination.December 2

I
yeah…December 2

R
yesDecember 2

I
So, there is a need for an evacuation model for livestock and a study on the radiation affects on the progeny of these affected animals still in the zone reproducing.
So, I would say that this is why they are euthanizing so many of the cattle and pigs.
All this could have been prevented. It hurts to think about it.December 2

A fine declaration of support for research by the Hachiko Coalition and contradicts what was said in a conversation thread about a proposed study.

April 5, 2012

**Hachiko Coalition:

“Naoto Matsumura, one of the last residents in Tomioka Japan, is trying to get the word out about the livestock issue. As we know, Mr. Matsumura has been assisting researchers by collecting urine and stool samples from the cows that he takes care of to find a way to decontaminate the cows, this is what all the farmers and vets are fighting for, they are confidant the cows can be decontaminated in proper form without harm. Matsumura is protesting that more cows are kept enclosed in fences and are being left little to no food and water, if they kill the cows, all the research they have accumulated so far to decontaminate the cows will be wasted. They are at the step where they are estimating costs to put the theory of decontamination into practice, it is almost at fruition. ……………..”

“R”
So if you intake cesium or other radiation your organs would take them as their particles and instead of getting rid of them they stay inside of the body like in muscle.December 2

“I”
At this point, as “R” stated, it is hard to remove contamination, and giving Chelating compounds to treat the radiation would not be acceptable for food animals.
yeah…it was not right, but we are going to give them tools from the lessons learned. December 2

JAVA’s Q&A session with MAFF: Acknowledgement that it takes the livestock 10-15 minutes to die while being euthanized.

Request 5: Please euthanize them by taking steps so that they would not be in pain from the view of animal welfare.

Answer: We conduct the processes according to OIE. This consists of three steps: Calm them -> Anastasia -> Muscle relaxant.

(We saw photos of cows tied legs)
* These were after they died. In order to move the bodies. It is impossible to tie legs when they are alive and we will not do such a thing.
* We usually do not leave bodies but because of radiation we might have to cut off work.
* We use muscle relaxant so that it will take about 10 to 15 minutes for a cow to die.
* Each local government has different way to take care of bodies.
