Fukushima endangered animals, no chance against the great Fukushima Decontamination machine

“Kiyomi Yokota, a naturalist and secretary of the Fukushima Nature Conservation Association, said that standing up for wildlife in the current situation would be difficult. “If people want to go home, I don’t think I could tell them, ‘No, stop the decontamination, save the fish,’” he said. Human health, in other words, trumps habitat.”
“Some species on the prefecture’s Red List of endangered or threatened species — including a grassland butterfly and the Japanese peregrine falcon, both listed as “vulnerable” — are found there and could be impacted if projects like these are implemented on a large scale.”

“Officials involved with the cleanup are well aware of the drawbacks to these approaches: huge amounts of radioactive waste that no one wants to store long term; immense investments of money, labor, and time; damage to wildlife habitat and soil fertility; increased erosion on scraped-bare ‘You take away all the soil and the ecosystem is destroyed,’ says one scientist. hillsides; and intrusion by people and machinery into every area scheduled for remediation.”

Nuclear Industry and the “unspoken” cost of its “safe cheap energy”. And, as is apparent with the whole Fukushima Nuclear disaster, no concern about the Fukushima animals, wild or domestic, shown by anyone involved. The animals that live there don’t pay taxes, the people that they would like to have move back, well, they do. And, as the Government of Japan has shown by their financing of radiation studies; the animals in the Fukushima contaminated areas, they are just a way for them to be able to measure “external and internal” radiation exposure.

The Fukushima Canary Dogs, the Government of Japan’s cheap way to monitor the effects of Radiation on animals

The Fukushima Canary Dogs, the Government of Japan’s cheap way to monitor the effects of Radiation on animals

Would you like to really know why the Japanese government and local officials have not been so anxious to remove the Fukushima Left-behind Chained dogs? There is a reason, and it is one that has been done using other animals. The Fukushima Left-behind chained dogs are like the canaries that were used by miners. The miners used the caged bird in mines because its death provided a warning of dangerous levels of toxic gases. The same thing is being done to the Fukushima chained dogs. This is why no one has gone in to remove them. They are a cheap indicator of what effect the radiation levels have on life. The Fukushima dogs aren’t going anywhere and they can be monitored. Do I see the Japan Veterinary Medical Association’s hand in this? What a cheap and effective way to monitor the effects of radiation on a “caged” animal that is living in a contaminated area. Don’t believe me, that’s fine. Once the Fukushima radiation studies start to be published, maybe you will. And, what those studies will reveal at the expense of the suffering of these animals is NOTHING NEW. But, hey, as long as they can say that it is helping to understand the effects of radiation on living organisms, so that it can HELP HUMANS, the lives and the suffering of these Fukushima Chained dogs are worth it, right?

Reposting: Now that Ruriko from Hachiko Animal Federation is helping Farm Arcadia with translations, do they need to worry about being sold out like Kachiku-Otasuke Tai. was?

March 28, 2013

Update : Farm Arcadia actually shut down.  That makes 2 for 2 cattle farms that were being assisted by Ruriko.  I am not sure how the Hoshi Family “farm” with their cattle and the subsequent arrest of the 2 Hoshi family members will impact the farm, but I am betting that this farm will also be shutting down.  That makes 3 for 3.   Imagine that.  (Not sure if it has to do with the “study” that she and Dr. Imamoto had collaborated to do with cattle and their offspring.   Time will tell.  All animal researchers don’t do a study and THEN NOT PUBLISH IT.  Time is on my side.

Ruriko , an administrator for the Hachiko Coalition is very helpful with translating.  She does so for a few sites.  The funny thing about all of this is, that even though she states that she was a member of Kachiku-Otasuke-Tai. org, she didn’t really do much translating for them.  A quick check of their facebook site shows this. Not much promoting their cause.  Was she just a member to check and see how this organization may affect plans to do Animal Studies using the cattle that she had in place?  Is she doing the same with Farm Arcadia? Only time will tell.
